Maritime Transport is one of the safest, least expensive and common modes of transportation for furniture. Sea freight services are best suited for long-distance carriage due to its huge vessel load capacity. The Indian sub-continent has multiple seaport entries, which makes it ideal for imports and exports.

The time difference between India and USA is stark. Depending on which coast you’re shipping from, the on-the-water transit time can double. Typically transit time is only given for the time that your goods spend on the water. Additional time in both countries for aspects like customs, delivery to and from ports, loading, and unloading should also be taken into account.

The transit time for furniture generally depends on three factors. The first one is the port of origin and the port of entry to time outside of the on-the-water transit time. For instance, if Delhi is the final destination for the goods to reach, then the most suitable port of entry would be Mumbai because Delhi is about 1000kms away from the nearest sea. This long journey adds extra time to the process before the goods even reach the port.

The next factor is quantity. Depending on which, the transit time differs. If the weight of your furniture is lesser, it might take anywhere between 5-7 days. If its weight exceeds 70kgs, then it might differ invariably from 15-30 days. The third and the most important factor is the type of service, wherein express and real-time delivery will have a huge impact on the transit time. Once the container is offloaded from the cargo ship, it will be moved to a warehouse where the goods will be unloaded.

After the customs clearance and preparation of, delivery will take another 7 days to reach the final destination. The duration of clearance in India will take around 24 hours but there are few cases where the customs got delayed for weeks. So if the actual delivery is scheduled within 4 to 7 days. It might be delayed for another 4 to 5 days in case of a clearance delay.

The ‘idiot box’ is playing an important role in our day-to-day life. It really is hard to imagine where we’d be without the Television, since most of us currently watch, or have watched, TV for some part of our life. A lot of the technological advancements in this day and age can be credited to the television. The Streaming Age, in which we find ourselves front and center of today can also be traced back to the growth of the television over the last few generations. The television is one of the best ways to get the most recent news and information, as well as entertainment. It is a great window to our society which helps connect with the rest of the world right from the very couch we sit at to watch it – and in many cases, it can also act as a mirror.

As with importing any object to India, you will also need to know about Indian Customs Regulations on TV Imports. In August 2013, the Revenue Department of India disallowed imports of flat panel television as part of free baggage allowance and levied a whopping 36.05% customs duty of assessed value. Irrespective of the size and brand, this tax is applied to all flat-screen TV imports from foreign countries. This special duty is not covered under the Duty-Free Allowance of INR 50,000.
Things to know of this change:
• The 36.05% is not solely dependent on the product value but also on the assessed value.
• Since the assessed value is not dependent on the original cost, it’s imperative to carry your bill/invoice which will help the customs officer.
• The assessed value of the product is based on the bill you produce and the customs officer’s judgment.
• You will have to declare the purchase in the new Customs Declaration Form and pay the duty before leaving.
• Generally, customs officials will have a standard database of TBs (which may / may not depend on the Indian market price). Some officials stick to these monetary values but some may offer relaxation in giving the assessed value.
• You can pay the duty in Indian as well as popular foreign currencies, as most of them are accepted in India.
• The assessed prices of TVs differ based on the model and the brand.
• Break down of 36.05%
Customs Duty – 35%
+ Education cess of 3%
Effective Total = 36.05%
• In terms of used TVs, travelers can request for discounts or depreciation in the assessed cost, which will be lower for second hand and old TV sets.
• Always get the receipt after paying your duties from the customs officials.
• The government has removed import duty only on the manufacturing parts of open-cell LEDs which are used in the production of Televisions.
